Baccalaureates

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is becoming an increasingly popular sixth-form course in independent schools (see International Baccalaureate).

Perhaps in response to this, a baccalaureate framework is being developed in England and Wales to provide more stretch and breadth to the straightforward A-level courses, leading to eg an AQA Baccalaureate in England, the Welsh Baccalaureate in Wales. For example, the English AQA Baccalaureate involves: three A-levels; an AS-level in general studies, critical thinking or citizenship; an extended project qualification; and enrichment activities (work-related, community activities, personal development).

Scotland is developing a different model, with language and science baccalaureates.
