Bury Grammar Boys

What it's like

Originally founded late in the 16th century, and re-endowed in 1726 by Roger Kay. In the 1960s, the school moved to new, purpose-built buildings to which new buildings have been added - most recently a state-of-the-art learning resource centre, art studios and chemistry labs. There are spacious playing fields and it has one of the oldest CCFs in the country. The school aims to unlock the potential of mind, body and spirit of each boy by providing a challenging academic education alongside a rich extra-curricular programme and high standards of pastoral care. There is much co-operation with the affiliated girls' school, including some joint sixth-form teaching (thus increasing the number of subjects that can be offered). Examination results are good. It has a Christian foundation but welcomes boys and staff from different faiths to create an open and inclusive community. It is strong in sport and games, particularly football, and in outdoor pursuits, especially the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and World Challenge.
