Barlborough Hall

What it's like

It began as the junior school to Mount St Mary's College, founded by the Society of Jesus in the 1840s. It was established as a separate prep school in 1939, when it moved to Barlborough Hall, a Grade 1 listed building dating back to 1583. The Hall retains much of its original character; the chapel and many teaching rooms are in the central building, while the Jacobean stable outbuildings and domestic quarters house the early years department, the theatre and gym. Like the senior school, it was originally a boys' school but has been co-educational for some 30 years. There are close links between the two schools, providing a shared vision of education for children throughout their school life; almost all pupils go on to Mount St Mary's. The school has a strong family atmosphere. It aims to offer a curriculum which is academically challenging while also recognising the child's emotional, social, physical and spiritual development.
