St Swithun's Junior
What it's like
It shares with the senior school an attractive campus of 45 acres on the eastern fringe of Winchester and overlooking open countryside. It has its own buildings, with a large music room, well-stocked library, ICT suite, sports hall and a hall for performing arts. Pupils also have access to many of the specialist facilities of the senior school. The schools ethos is that education should be about discovery, a sense of adventure and a spirit of excitement and fun. It is a non-selective school, which produces good results through good teaching in small groups of motivated children. A range of sports is available and there is good participation in music and drama. The majority of pupils go on to St Swithun's senior school.
Pupils & entrance
Pupils: Age range 3–11 (boys 3-7), 170 day pupils (162 girls, 9 boys). Entrance: Main entry age 3. Non-selective entry. 1 class (of 24) in each year group. No special skills or religious requirements.
Scholarships & bursaries
Bursaries of up to 100% may be available on a mean-tested basis. No scholarships available.
Parents
15+% are doctors, lawyers etc; 15+% in industry/commerce. All live within 30 miles.
Head & staff
Headmistress: Mrs Pim Grimes, in post from 2007. Educated at St Hilary's, Godalming, The Grove School, Hindhead, and at Sussex University (English). Previously Head of Pre-Prep at Barfield School, Surrey. Teaching staff: 13 full-time 4 part-time.. Annual turnover 2%. Average age 40.
Exam results
Pupils take Common Entrance at age 11. Pupils score a Level 5 average at Key Stage 2. Some 20% are awarded scholarships to secondary schools.
Pupils' destinations
Approx 75% of girls go on to St Swithun's senior school (entrance by Common Entrance). Boys leave at age 7, to attend local prep schools.
Curriculum
All National Curriculum subjects taught. Specialist subject teachers introduced at age 9. Special provision: Specialist SEN provision. Languages: French taught from age 5. ICT: Taught both as a discrete subject and across the curriculum from age 3. PCs and interactive whiteboards in all classrooms plus ICT suite of 12 PCs.
The arts
75+% of pupils learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams may be taken. Some 12 musical groups including steel band, rock band, chamber choir, string quartet etc. Non- competitive music festival, spring concert, etc. All pupils involved in school drama productions; 2 per term eg The Tempest (Years 3and 4), Rocky Monster Show (Years 5 and 6) etc. Music, drama, dance and art all offered as extra-curricular activities.
Sports & activities
Sport: Netball, lacrosse, rounders, swimming, tennis compulsory part of the curriculum. Optional: judo, football, golf, rugby. Activities: 30+ clubs and societies, including watercolour, squad swimming, rounders, prep.
School life
Uniform: School uniform worn, except in the nursery. Houses: Competitive houses. Religion: Church of England; attendance at religious worship compulsory. Social: French language trip abroad. Pupils allowed to bring own bike to school. Meals self-service and compulsory; pupils not allowed to bring their own food. School shop. Most pupils travel to school by car. Supervision available before and after school (7.30am to 6pm).
