Quinton House

What it's like

Founded in 1947, the school was originally dedicated to the education of girls. Boys were first admitted in 1963 and it is now fully co-educational. It occupies an attractive rural setting and has good facilities. A sound education is provided and examination results are creditable. There is a basic range of sport and a well-supported art department. The school prides itself on having a strong family atmosphere, where all pupils are encouraged and supported so as to prduce well-rounded and considerate individuals who perform well academically.

Pupils & entrance

Pupils: Total age range 2-18; 354 day pupils (177 boys, 177 girls). Senior department, 11-18, approx 170 pupils. Entrance: Main entry ages 5 and 11. For sixth form entry, 5+ GCSEs at least grade C. No special skills or religious requirements. Approx 60% of main intake at 11+ is from state schools; many also from own junior department.

Discounts for siblings. Parents not expected to buy textbooks. Average extras £143 (exam fees).

Head & staff

Headmaster: Geraint P Jones, appointed 2009. Educated at Llanharry School and at Swansea University (German and Russian). Previously Vice-Principal and Director for Sport at St Edmunds School, Salisbury, and teacher and sports co-rdinator at Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School, Salisbury. Also Ofsted inspector. Teaching staff: 36 full time, 4 part time. Average turnover 4%.

Exam results

GCSE: 24 pupils in fifth year; 88% gained at least grade C in 8+ subjects. A-level: 24 pupils in upper sixth; 80% passed in 3 subjects, 20% in 2 subjects.

Pupils' destinations

100% of sixth form leavers go on to a degree course (25% after a gap year). 45% take courses in science and engineering, 15% in law, 30% in humanities and social sciences, 10% in art and design.

Curriculum

GCSE, AS and A-levels. 15 exam subjects offered (including Chinese). Sixth form: Most sixth formers take 4 subjects at AS-level, 3 at A-level; all take A-level general studies. 65% take science/maths subjects, 25% take arts/humanities, 10% both. Key skills integrated into sixth form courses. Vocational: Work experience available. Languages: French and German compulsory ages 8-16; both languages and Chinese offered to GCSE, AS and A-level; also Spanish GCSE. ICT: Is integrated into all subjects across the curriculum. Most pupils take GCSE or BCS qualifications. 110 computers for pupil use (for the whole school day), all networked and with email and internet access.

The arts

Music: Up to 50% of pupils learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams can be taken. 2 musical groups (choir and choral singers). Drama and dance: Both offered, GCSE drama can be taken. Art and design: On average, 24 take GCSE, 6 AS-level, 5 A-level.

Sports & activities

Sports: Football, rugby, hockey, netball, cricket compulsory. Pupils can take GCSE, AS and A-level PE. Activities: Pupils can take bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Some 30 clubs and activities across whole school eg percussion, drama, trampolining, Spanish

School life

Uniform: School uniform worn; business wear in sixth form. Houses and prefects: Competitive houses. Head boy/girl, prefects and head of house elected by students and staff. Religion: Attendance at religious worship compulsory. Social: Pupils may bring own car/bike to school. Meals self-service. School shop for uniform only.
