Windermere St Anne's

What it's like

Founded in 1863, it has a magnificent situation in the Lake District National Park, on a site of 80 acres with splendid views over Lake Windermere and the fells. Its pleasant and well-equipped buildings are spread over two main sites. Originally a girls' school, it became co-educational in 1999. The junior department, Elleray, is in its own large grounds, closer to Windermere. It is Christian in outlook but non-denominational. It attracts pupils from all over the world and endeavours to provide a liberal and progressive education in which activities such as sailing, canoeing, fell walking, music, art, drama and voluntary service play an important part. It is a member of Round Square - a group of internationally based schools following the Kurt Hahn traditions - which allows an unusually wide range of exchanges in Europe, the Commonwealth and the USA. The school now offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma in the sixth form. The teaching and examination results are good. It has a very strong music department, as well as drama. The range of sports and games, societies and clubs is extensive, with much emphasis on outdoor pursuits and field studies. There is also a very big commitment to local community schemes and an outstanding record in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
