Mougins

What it's like

Founded in 1964. It is on a purpose build campus a few miles from Cannes, situated in a wooded corner of the huge Sophia Antipolis high technology park. The curriculum is English, leading to GCSE/IGCSE and A-level and meeting the entrance requirements of universities world-wide. Examination results are very good. All the staff are qualified professionals. The official language is English but most pupils also speak French.

Pupils & entrance

Pupils: Total age range 3-18; 445 day pupils (261 boys, 184 girls). Entrance: Open entrance; for sixth-form entry, GCSE at least grade C in sixth-form subjects.

Scholarships & bursaries

Reduction (up to 10% of fees per child) for parents with three or more children.

Parents

Drawn largely from the local international community, some transient but most established. About 30% are British or American, 16% French, the remainder drawn from a wide range of nationalities.

Head & staff

Headmaster: Brian Hickmore, appointed 1995. Educated at Sussex University. Previously Deputy Head at the school and Deputy Head of a large London comprehensive school. Teaching staff: 34 full-time staff (all of whom speak French).

Exam results

GCSE: On average, 45 pupils in upper fifth: 75% gain at least grade C in 5+ subjects. A-levels: 33 in upper sixth: 40% pass in 4+ subjects; 60% in 3 subjects. Average final point score achieved by upper sixth formers 300.

Pupils' destinations

95% of sixth-form leavers go on to a degree course (10% after a gap year), 5% to Oxbridge. 15% take courses in science and engineering, 60% in humanities and social sciences, 10% in art and design, 15% in vocational subjects eg performing arts. Others typically go on to language courses in France or other European countries.

Curriculum

GCSE, AS and A-levels. Special provision: Special help with ESL and learning difficulties provided. ICT: Taught both as a discrete subject and across the curriculum. 30 computers for pupil use (9 hours a day), all networked and with email and internet access.

The arts

Music: Tuition in musical instruments available. GCSE music offered. Art and design: On average, 14 take GCSE, 6 A-level.

Sports & activities

Sport: Athletics, basketball, football, indoor hockey, handball, badminton, volleyball. GCSE and A-level exams may be taken. Gymnastics, orienteering victories at national level. Activities: Drama, art, piano, flute, violin, guitar, harp, football, gymnastics, choir all available as extra-curricular activities.
