Loughborough Grammar

What it's like

Founded in 1495 by Thomas Burton, Merchant of the Staple of Calais, though it is likely that a school existed well before that date. It moved to its present site in 1852 where it enjoys most attractive grounds, gardens and playing fields. The buildings of the Victorian period are handsome and in the collegiate style. Three main buildings form three sides of a quadrangle. There have been a number of additions in the past 30 years, including an art and design centre, sports hall and theatre and a modern languages suite; most recently a new music building has been added, shared with Loughborough High. In general, the school is exceptionally well-equipped and the playing fields are outstanding. It prides itself on its family atmosphere, and very active house system. Examination results are consistently very good. Music and drama are very strongly supported and there is much enterprise in these cultural activities, frequently in collaboration with Loughborough High, its sister school (sharing the prep school and the new music school). A wide range of sports and games is available and the school has long been known for its excellence in these, providing a substantial number of representatives at county, regional and national level. A variety of clubs and societies caters for most conceivable needs. The big CCF (Army, Navy and Air Force) is voluntary with about 300 cadets. There is considerable emphasis on outdoor pursuits and the school has a distinguished record in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
