Schools are required by law to ensure that parents living outside the UK appoint a guardian. Guardians step in if you cannot yourself – at half terms, school events or in emergencies. Your child may also need a guardian if you live a long way from school. It is self-evidently best to appoint someone your child knows and likes. Alternatively, you may get help finding a guardian from the school; or from Aegis, which provides a forum for best practice and has links to recognised guardianship organisations (http://www.aegisuk.net">www.aegisuk.net; tel 01453 755 160).
