School Heads report that family breakdown is by far the largest cause of pupils’ behavioural problems. There is a lot of it about, so at least your children will not be alone.

Let the school know what is going on. The time of actual separation is probably not the time to change your child’s school unless absolutely unavoidable. If your child is already at boarding school this may provide valuable continuity – but keep in closer touch than usual.

Divorce and separation can make school fees more difficult; if this looks likely, let the school’s bursar know.
